Guild members recently visited the @vt_woodworking Guild members recently visited the @vt_woodworkingschool in Fairfax for a day of conversation, creativity, and connection. It was a chance to meet the talented students and instructors, see the inspiring work in progress, and learn more about the hands-on approach that defines the VWS experience.

The school continues to shape the next generation of fine furniture makers, with alumni going on to join respected studios, launch their own shops, and pursue advanced design degrees.

A special highlight was meeting Lance Hampton, the 2025 recipient of the Guild of Vermont Furniture Makers scholarship.

From London’s bustling streets to a quiet barn i From London’s bustling streets to a quiet barn in Hinesburg, Vermont, John Lomas has carved out a life of craftsmanship and creativity.

After escaping an office job nearly 40 years ago, John studied restoration and fine furniture in England before moving to Vermont in 1992. Today, he works solo out of a barn he built himself—designing and handcrafting functional pieces inspired by centuries-old design and the natural beauty of the Northeast.

“Wood is my medium,” John shares. “We have a rich, local resource of temperate hardwoods here in the northeast. I love to mix them with exotic wood detailing.”

Whether it’s a dining set with bookmatched curly cherry or a hidden Buddha grotto tucked into a custom cabinet, John’s work reflects purpose, detail, and a touch of wonder.

Inspired by 18th‑century American Windsor chairs, the Waltham arm chair honors early craftsmanship with spoke shaving, hand‑planed surfaces, and in‑shaving that bear the touch of the maker. The milk paint finish brings harmony to the mixed woods, and the signature floating back design delivers subtle comfort.
