I, Jim Becker, have just completed a Standing Desk. The customer approached me complimenting a design I had done before, a standing desk based on a Eero Saarinen designed dining side table called the Kingwood Server
The first standing desk featured an adjustable tilting top and a large interior storage space. This new variation features a fixed top and two drawers in lieu of the large bin. Both designs pick up on the large arc of the bottom stretcher in the Saarinen piece, however the desks use this arc functionally as a footrest as well as a design detail and support. The new standing desk is cherry with ebonized walnut drawer pulls and has a brushed brass scuff plate on the footrest/stretcher. The construction is mortise and tennon. The dovetails on the drawers are hand cut. The finish is three coats of my own urethane/linseed oil blend, applied hot and rubbed between coats with steel wool. A final application of paste wax completes the finish.
