Modern Sofa Table in cherry and curly maple

This modern sofa table was a custom table ordered for a home in California.  The legs and top are cherry, and the table aprons are curly Vermont sugar maple (the same maple that maple syrup comes from).  The design of the sofa table is similar to a console table with drawers and a hall table that I have made in the past.  For this version, the customers who ordered it requested it in a custom size of 31.5” high x 62” wide x 14.5” deep.  It is a nice long and low table, and although it was made to go behind a sofa, this table design would also work well along a wall as a console table or side table.

I shaped each of the legs by hand with a spoke shave, to achieve the rounded profile, which gradually changes in radius from the top to the bottom of the legs.  The legs and aprons are joined with traditional mortise and tenon construction.

I can make this piece in other custom sizes, as well as in other types of wood, including other combinations of two contrasting woods, or I can make the table in all one wood, with the aprons the same as the legs and table top.  I am always happy to discuss options, if you have a custom request.
