It’s 2016 – and that means, for better or worse, it’s time for New Year’s Resolutions yet again. To inspire you to take a fresh approach, we are mixing things up with “design resolutions” you can be excited about making – and keeping – in 2016.
Resolution #1: Use Reclaimed Materials
Recycling has been a part of Vermont’s culture for longer than the state has existed. These days, we think of putting our plastic bottles in blue bins, but recycling materials and repurposing items has long been an important part of daily life, especially in the hardscrabble winters of the region.
Modern style now acknowledges this time-honored tradition, and not only are reclaimed items the environmentally responsible and sensible choice, but they’re now the stylish choice, too, with contemporary craftsmen making beautiful works of art with materials previously cast aside.
Check out some of our gorgeous furniture made out of reclaimed materials to get started on this resolution. You may also find great items at architectural salvage stores.
Resolution #2: Invest in a Family Heirloom
While many modern families come up with new family traditions as their family grows, many consider heirlooms to be old family treasures (emphasis on the old!). But, all heirlooms were new at some point in the past. In 2016, add a new heirloom to your home.
Heirlooms are great gifts for your children and grandchildren that connect them to their family history, so we suggest making it a meaningful piece. For example, if music is an important part of your household, consider an instrument as an heirloom. For families steeped in tradition, clocks and timepieces are a classic option. For a personal touch, letters, stories and photographs make a great choice. And of course, for the pragmatist, furniture is a great choice that your family can make use of and display in your homes for years to come.
We don’t need to tell you that our website is the perfect place to get started on this resolution!
Resolution #3: Visit an Artist or Maker
When choosing art and design options for your home, there is simply no better way to know what fits the best without seeing what an artist or maker can do, and speaking to them about what’s possible to create. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to learn more about them and their practice. So, make a plan (and a weekend of it!) to visit an artist or craftsperson in person.
Many of our furniture makers offer tours of their facilities, and you’d be surprised how convenient your closest shop location is. Take a look at this map: https://www.vermontfurnituremakers.com/shop-locations.
Resolution #4: Try Natural Textures
For the upcoming year, strong textures and “going tech-less” will be popular choices for interior style. Natural textures, like brick, stone, and wood are a great way to stay ahead of 2016 styles by killing two style birds with one (textured, unpolished) stone. Taking the TV out of the living room and adding natural textures in its place imbues an organic feel that will get people talking.
As an alternative, hand-carved textures in wood furniture also can give your home a modern feel while keeping with the cutting-edge styles for the year. It’s the best of both worlds.
No matter what your resolutions, heed the words of William Morris, founder of the Arts & Crafts movement: “Have nothing in your homes that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”
Happy New Year!
