Award-winning floor lamp: a collaboration with stained glass artist Phil Godenschwager of Atlantic Art Glass and Design, and LED lighting engineer Jason Orzell of LEDdynamics. Both businesses are based in my town, Randolph, Vermont.
Carved FSC cherry and stained glass with custom LED lighting.
This one of a kind floor lamp was the first time I have incorporated stained glass and LEDs into a piece. It was a fun process. It was made of carved cherry that is FSC certified as sustainably harvested. The stained glass shade is illuminated by three LEDs which emit the same warm color of light as an incandescent bulb. A fourth LED is mounted in the front of the base to illuminate the carving. The entire system of four LEDs in this lamp uses only 4 watts of power!
Special thanks to Jason Orzell for his expertise in designing the LED lighting system in the best way to illuminate the glass, and also his idea to light the front of the carving, which was based on his experience doing architectural lighting to illuminate the exterior details of buildings. Thanks also to Jason’s boss Bill McGrath, for giving his design team the freedom and encouragement to work on creative lighting projects with local artists.
This floor lamp won a first place award in the 2010 Vermont Fine Furniture and Wood Products Design Competition. It was sold in 2010 (it now resides in a home in Calgary, Alberta, Canada), but please contact me to discuss a custom lighting project.
