The writing desk was designed to fit in concert with the Prospect Street Nightstand and the Clark Bed. The 1.5° splayed legs tie this design in with the splayed legs of the Clark Bed.
The central drawer is joined with hand-cut dovetails. These thin pins are only possible by sawing by hand. There is no machine that can achieve that style of dovetail. The drawers also feature stops that keep the whole drawer from being pulled out all the way on accident.
The front and side aprons are made of a continuous board, simplifying the look visually. You see it with the grain in the drawer front lining up at the seam of the drawer. This adds a bit of time and consideration to the building process, but it is a worthwhile step.
The Prospect Street Writing Desk is made of Black Cherry with Tulip Poplar drawer parts. It was built as a set of twelve bedroom sets for the Prospect Street Writers House in North Bennington, Vt. It is finished with Waterlox varnish and paste wax.
