The design of the Nachtwey bookshelf was to be simple, clean and refined. The understated details are highlighted here with a stopped chamfer on the front vertical corners. The cove cut on the top lightens the weight (visually, mainly).
The physical joinery is shown off here. The shelves are held in place with a combination of a dado and a sliding dovetail. The top is held to the verticals with four hidden sliding tapered dovetails.
The main case is made from solid cherry boards, wide enough to use only two boards glued together. The backs are made of cherry ply in order to reduce the cost. They are rarely seen when books are in place.
The Nachtwey Bookshelf is made of Black Cherry. I originally made a set of four shelves for the great photo journalist James Nachtwey. This rendition was made for friends and the dimensions were re-arranged from the originals. It is finished with boiled linseed oil, a Waterlox top coat, and paste wax.
