I use line in my furniture to emphasize the beauty of a material that offers people a unique relationship with the natural world. I draw inspiration from George Nakashima and James Krenov, who emphasized the natural forms and features of wood in approachable, functional and elegant designs. I utilize modern, engineered materials only in service to this goal. Though many modern studio furniture makers now incorporate ornamentation, color and textural elements into their designs, my response to the challenge of balancing form and function is to simplify composition. Every line should contribute directly to the internal, functional logic of a piece of furniture. It should either demonstrate function or direct the eye or hand with a simple gesture to open a door, touch, or sit. Though it must be functional, a piece of furniture must also invite participation. Like any other artwork, it should persuade.
